Week 6

Interesting reading this week as it really pertained to my own life, especially today!  As my daughter was getting off her bus today I noticed she had been crying, while asking her what was wrong she responded that she was being "bullied" by a 3rd grade boy on the bus (she is in 2nd grade).  Upon asking what had taken place she proceeded to tell me that he was making fun of her because of the way she looked and throwing garbage in her hair.  My daughter was so upset and it was heartbreaking, all I could think about was how this all relates to adolescent egocentrism and maybe why adolescents tend to think that everybody is talking and thinking about them.  Do children picking on other children influence self-esteem?  Does it strenghthen it or weaken it?  What are the long term affects on these children who are bullied and made fun of?  Well as media portrays the worst cases it leads to suicide.  This is something that I am so against and tomorrow I will be going directly to the school to adress the problem.  Even if it wasn't my child I would still be this upset.

  1. That is so sad to hear. I would have to agree that it doesn't matter who the child is if you hear that they are being bullied you feel sad. I hope they fix your issue! Good luck

  2. Good for you, get to the bottom of it right away. I think being bullied effects a kid on so many levels. I saw this happen with my own kids. They slowly started to dread going to school, riding the bus was one of the worst for some reason. It begins to effect grades, attitude from the teacher becomes negative because they start to struggle in class, it's just a huge negative impact on them. If you can help at all don't delay. I found the school to be very little help as I went through this though, I had to take my complaints to the parents to get anything done. Good luck, I feel for your situation.

  3. The first few years of school for me were really tough, I kept getting picked on and made fun of in school. Not just a few kids but the whole class, and at some point I think even one of my teachers made some remark the other kids were using. I do not remember my parents envolment in all of this but I know I didnt stay in that school much longer than 2nd grade. My grades did drop and I would do anything to try and get out of going to school, fake being sick or tried silly old wive's tales to cause me to get sick (yellow mustard to the bottom of your feet with socks over it was supposed to make you wake up with a fever in the morning... yeah it didnt work).

It certainly left a bad taste in my mouth for a few years to come and my like/dislike of school stayed much the same.
